Sheet vinyl is another great and inexpensive type of flooring. Instead of being installed in individual tiles, vinyl is most often placed in one large sheet (hence the name).

Because it is nonporous and can be sterilized, it is often used in areas where the floor might get wet often, like bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Sheet vinyl can come in many patterns; the most common is a faux tile look, like in this picture.

Tile Flooring is both beautiful and versatile. Tile comes in every color and almost any texture. Once you have chosen tile as your flooring, the options are endless. There are several things to consider when using tile depending on the room, the amount of foot traffic, and the coloring and lighting of the rest of the room.

When selecting tile, the options are almost endless. Here is a short list of the most popular types of tile:

  • Manufactured tile includes both ceramic and porcelain tile. These tiles are the most customizable in regards to size, color, and texture, as they are fabricated in a factory to exact specifications. Ceramic and porcelain can also be the most cost-effective type of tile, available in very affordable selections.
  • Natural stone tile comes in a variety of options. Depending on the desired color and texture, there will be a perfect natural stone tile option for you, including:
    • Travertine tile, a natural limestone tile, comes in neutral colors that can range from creamy to golden rust colors. It is extremely durable and gives a very classic look to any room.
    • Slate tile comes in a variety of dark colors, including many shades of gray, and often includes hints of greens, reds, yellows, and blues. Slate has a striking appearance, particularly when wet, and is therefore used often in bathrooms (especially showers). When using slate, ensure that you take into account how dark the tiles are when covering entire areas.
    • Marble tile, elegant and timeless, is a softer natural stone tile. While it is slightly easier to chip than harder stones like granite, light scratches can be buffed out. Usually thought of as a slippery and smooth tile, it is also available as tumbled marble for a more natural look.
    • Granite tile is available in almost any shade or color. While using granite slab for countertops is very popular, using granite tiles can be a great option for flooring.

Hardwood flooring adds beauty to living areas. It is versatile and comes in an array of shades from the lightest pines to the deepest cherries. Because hardwood is a natural product, it is more sensitive to water than other flooring substrates. While it is perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, and hallways, it is better to avoid hardwood in moist areas like bathrooms.

When selecting hardwood, there are several options from which to choose, including:

  • Solid Hardwood - planks of pure, 100% wood. Some believe this type of hardwood to have the most personality.
  • Engineered Hardwood - fabricated from layers of real wood glued together with the grain facing different directions. This type of wood can have superior strength to solid hardwood.
  • Laminate Hardwood - this is not a true wood but instead a laminate substrate fabricated to look like real wood. Decades ago, this was not a great option because it didn't look real, but now there are beautiful laminates available in different tones that even have wood grain in each piece.

Choosing new flooring for your home is important for many reasons. The primary reason is usually aesthetic value; everyone wants their home to stand out and look great. This is important, but it is also important to examine the different types of flooring available when considering resale value of your home in addition to the longevity of the flooring you will be using.
